Welcome to the Fuel Ready Reckoner

Welcome to the Freight Best Practice Fuel Ready Reckoner. This tool enables you to quickly estimate how much fuel (and therefore money) you could save for various different fuel saving techniques.

Please click on ‘My Fleet’ to start calculating your savings. Following your calculation, you can view the results by clicking on ‘Results’ and return to the tool to try new interventions and see the effects. The tool should take around 30 minutes to use although if you have a large or complicated fleet this could be longer. The tool should be used to provide an insight into which fuel saving ideas could be most beneficial to investigate. Actual results may differ for different companies as operational style and other factors can influence the amount of fuel any measure can save. Before implementing any fuel saving techniques further research should be carried out specific to your business.

In order to increase the real-life information available to the programme and the accuracy of this tool we would also ask that you fill in a short questionnaire for us. This can be found by clicking on ‘Questionnaire’. The questionnaire should take between 5 and 10 minutes to complete.

Payback Calculator

Calculate the payback period for any fuel saving intervention by clicking on the link below. Payback can be calculated for any intervention on any type of vehicle using a variety of different payment methods. You can either input your own estimates of your vehicle and intervention details or you can automatically import details for any intervention you have looked at using the Ready Reckoner. Using this tool you can work out which interventions would be of the greatest use to your fleet and see where a small amount of investment would make the most difference to your bottom line.

Quick Savings

To get a quick idea of the sorts of fuel savings you could make try out the Quick Example. You can estimate savings quickly for two standard types of vehicle: a 40T articulated vehicle used on trunking runs and a 7.5T rigid urban delivery vehicle. For a more thorough estimation of savings specific to your fleet and operation click on My Fleet.

Intervention Inter-Relation

A key strength of the Fuel Ready Reckoner is to provide the user with the ability to understand savings that can be made from a combination of interventions.

It is not the case that fuel savings derived from interventions can be combined to produce a saving that is the sum of their individual parts i.e. two interventions that individually save 10% used on the same vehicle will not save 20% when combined together on the same vehicle.
